Setting Up Accounts

As an Independent Study in Idaho student, you are provided with a University of Idaho student account. You will use this account to access your course via Canvas, your University of Idaho email through Office 365, University of Idaho library resources, and more.

To go through the initial setup process to activate your account, you need access to the phone number or email address you provided on your registration form. Additionally, you will need your Vandal number (also called a V-number). You can find this on your registration confirmation letter; if you cannot find it, please contact the ISI office.

Setup a New Student Account

Complete the process to set up a new student account described on the New Student Guide.

If you encounter any problems during the setup process, submit a service ticket at support.vig2.net. When submitting a ticket, include the following information:

  • your name
  • your V-number
  • a note that indicates you are an Independent Study in Idaho student
  • a short description of your problem (including screenshots and error messages when appropriate)

Once you have set up your security profile and activated your account, you will be able to access your course via Canvas.

If your course does not appear on Canvas within three business days of the date of registration, please email the ISI office. Likewise, if you have not received registration confirmation within three business days of ordering your course, please email the ISI office

The NetID (username) and password are used to access VandalMail, BbLearn and VandalWeb. The student V Number, provided in the Registration Confirmation Email, will be used to establish your NetID. Typically the NetID is the first four letters of your last name and the last four numbers of your V number; for example, smit1234. View the instructions at the top of the page for creating your NetID password and accessing your @vandals.vig2.net email. Once you have a NetID password, wait at least 15 minutes before trying to log in.

Students are required to activate their VandalMail email account ending with "@vandals.vig2.net." All ISI correspondence will be conducted via VandalMail, so students should check this email account regularly for important communications from instructors and ISI staff. Students are responsible for all information sent to them by email.

A student can access this email on the web using a VandalMail address and NetID password. Email forwarding is available for students who prefer to use an email address other than VandalMail.

Confidentiality Requests

Email addresses are considered directory information and will be kept confidential only if the student submits the Request to Restrict the Disclosure of Directory Information (Confidentiality of Student Records) form to the U of I Registrar's Office. Visit the Office of the Registrar Forms, select Confidentiality Request. The student must also notify the ISI office.

All ISI courses are delivered through Canvas, which is the Learning Management System at U of I that hosts the course guide and other items essential to the course. In most cases, students submit assignments through Canvas. Please contact the ISI office if your course does not appear in Canvas within three business days of the date of registration.

VandalWeb allows currently enrolled students to access their personal U of I-related information through a secure website. It provides access the following:

  • payment records
  • unofficial transcripts for ISI courses sponsored by the U of I and credits transferred from other institutions
  • personal contact information: If students update their contact information in VandalWeb, they must notify the ISI office by submitting a Student Information Update Form.

Students who are not currently enrolled in an ISI course will loose access to VandalWeb after two weeks unless they are also a current University of Idaho student.

How do I reset/change my NetID password?

If you get the error "The email address or password is incorrect," you may need to reset your NetID password. This page will accept an expired password. Once logged in, select the "Change Passwords" menu item.

How do I reset my password if I cannot remember my old NetID password?

If you do not know your previous NetID password, you can select the option to reset a forgotten password on the main login page. This will require that you receive a code at an email address or phone number associated with your student information. If you do not have access to a previous email address or phone number, you will need to contact the OIT Student Technology Center (STC) by Submitting an Incident service ticket at support.vig2.net or phoning 208-885-4357. Please be sure to update your security profile to include at least three questions and one verified contact so you can reset your password without assistance going forward.

I am locked out of my email and BbLearn. What can I do?

When attempting to log into VandalMail, if you do not see the words "University of Idaho Sign-In," you will need to delete email bookmarks and clear your browser cache by following the instructions in the YouTube video listed above under Additional Resources.

Who do I contact if I need further assistance with my student accounts?

Contact the OIT Student Technology Center (STC) by Submitting an Incident service ticket or phoning 208-885-4357. A list of tutorials are also listed under the Self-help Knowledge Base.
